Defending the Penninsula - A Film by Charles Vincent Sabba

The Russo Brothers: Two of America’s greatest directors, producers and screenwriters.

Our film for the Russo Brothers Italian American Film Forum Grant is finally done and submitted.

It is still not released publicly yet. We will release it on Sept 30 after the Russo Brothers Italian-American Film Forum completes the judging process and picks the 3 runner ups. After that you will be able to view it on our Articolo 9 Consulting VIMEO account.

This has been a busy 5 months since we received the grant back in April. We did 2 U.S. coasts: Malibu/Pacific Palisades, California and New York and Boston; then 2 Italian coasts: Cerveteri, Roma and Fano. We interviewed archeologists, cultural patrimony experts, two mayors in Italy and the lawyer in Fano, Italy who is fighting to get the Lisippo Bronze of Fano repatriated to Italy (currently held by the Getty Villa)! In this film we cover the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Robbery and Isabella Stewart Gardner’s Italian art purchasing habits through Bernard Berenson, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Euphronious Krater case, and the current legal and moral battle bewreeen the Italian Government and the Getty Villa for the ownership and return of the Lisippo di Fano (which the Getty calls the Getty Bronze). The Russo Brothers chose 7 grant awardees out of 280 applications. Below is a description of our competition (it is going to be hard to beat the kid with the pizzas!๐Ÿคฃ). But winning isn’t important, We Are honored to be in the top 7 and very happy to have an opportunity  to spread our message about Article 9 of the Italian Constitution as well as the battle for the Lisippo Bronze.

The recipients of the 2022 grant awards were:

Charles Vincent Sabba, whose film “Defending the Peninsula” investigates art theft and antiquities looting in Italy and how law enforcement in both the USA and Italy work to protect the artistic and cultural patrimony of Italy’s 70% share of the world’s great art.

Philip Amara, whose yet untitled film examines the history and contributions Italian Americans have made to the comic book medium which has spawned so many of today’s blockbuster films.

Stefano Da Fre`, whose film, Stolen Dough, recounts the billion-dollar legal battle begun by a 13-year-old Italian immigrant against one of the largest pizza chains in America.

Agata De Santis, whose documentary film, Rossi & Company, explores the history of the 112-year-old Italian American gift shop in NYC’s Little Italy, and the struggle its 71 year old proprietor is having to keep its storied doors open.

Rose Lytle, whose documentary film, Speak American, focuses on the challenges facing younger Italian Americans today to preserve and perpetuate our culture.

Charles Marsala, whose film, de Pinedo’s 1927 Four Continents Flight, explores the aeronautic accomplishments of the Italian who crossed the Atlantic two months before Lindbergh.

Anthony Palmiotto, whose narrative film, The Football Wedding, highlights a
long-forgotten Italian American wedding tradition through a nostalgic romantic comedy.

Patricia Santangelo, whose documentary film, Lucky Corner, celebrates the life and accomplishments of the family’s patriarch, Alfred E. Santangelo, one of the Italian American community’s earliest political champions.

This grant is an amazing opportunity and it is extremely generous of the sponsors. The Russo Brothers Italian American Film Forum is sponsored by four entities: the National Italian American Foundation, the Italian Sons and Daughters of America, the Russo Brothers and AGBO.
